First family law need? Data protection

When a Massachusetts resident is facing a divorce or child custody fight, it can be hard to know where to begin. Finding an attorney to manage the matter, speaking to friends and loved ones about the changes to come, and a multitude of practical matters all need to be addressed. One important thing to consider during a family law case is the danger of leaving one's data unprotected.

Technology has become such an ingrained part of daily life that it's often taken for granted. People share their data with those around them, often unintentionally. For example, many Apple users link their phones, tablets and computers to make it easier to share photos, music and streaming services, and to track the location of the family's devices.

In the event of a divorce, however, that level of access can be troublesome. Many individuals don't want their estranged spouse checking their email, tracking their whereabouts each day, and accessing their calendar and other information. Yet without taking steps to secure that data, it remains wide open.

The process begins by changing all passwords and security questions. Be sure to use passwords that are difficult to guess, and make a list of all devices and accounts that require passwords. For those in Massachusetts who are not particularly tech savvy, it might be worth the time and expense to take all devices to a professional to ensure that they are secure. Doing so can help avoid unintentionally broadcasting one's every move during a family law matter.
