Divorce stress can wreck your health and wellness

For Massachusetts residents preparing to bring their marriage to a close, it's important to understand the impact that such a big life change can have on health and wellness. Divorce can be stressful, and any significant change can lead to unhealthy choices, even if they aren't made on a conscious level. Avoiding health issues requires some preplanning.

According to researchers, divorced people are less active and less satisfied with their lives as compared to those who are married or single. In fact, it appears that divorce can even increase the risk of an early death for some people. It's possible to avoid these outcomes, but a degree of planning and effort is required.

For example, if one's spouse is always insisting on choosing fresh, organic ingredients for healthful meals, it's tempting to rebel during those first few single months with takeout and processed treats. Or, a spouse who is consistently dragged to the gym or on hikes by a partner could slide into a sedentary lifestyle after a divorce. Researchers believe that spouses can act as a moderating force on each other, keeping negative behaviors in check.

It's easy to believe that maintaining a healthy lifestyle during and after a divorce is a simple matter. In reality, there will be plenty of days when mental or physical exhaustion make the couch and takeout a very appealing option. In order to avoid negative health consequences, it's imperative to find a way to stay active during this time of transition.

As with so many divorce issues, staying healthy is absolutely possible with the right degree of planning and motivation. Simply understanding the risk of negative health consequences is a great place to start. From that point forward, Massachusetts spouses should take steps to stay active, choose a healthy diet, and connect with friends and loved ones during this tumultuous time.
