Massachusetts police officer charged with DUI

A Massachusetts State Police trooper had to hand in his badge after he was allegedly drinking while driving. The law enforcement officer was taken off duty temporarily after recently being arrested for DUI along with other charges. A spokesperson for the MSP said the 35-year-old trooper was arrested after being stopped and allegedly showing signs of being impaired.

The officer was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor and making a marked lanes violation. His bail was paid, and he is set to appear in court to speak to the charges. The accused was relieved of his duties until he undergoes a hearing within his department.

Those who have been accused of driving under the influence should speak with an attorney prior to entering a plea to formal charges. DUI cases can present many complicated issues a lawyer may be able to properly analyze. There may be things like technical errors in a police report or other documents that could potentially merit dismissal of a charge even before the case reaches trial.

Massachusetts residents charged with a DUI may not be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of their cases until obtaining legal counsel. Those who are battling a DUI or an OUI charge are presumed innocent unless and until proved otherwise in court. It is incumbent upon the prosecution to prove every element of a criminal charge beyond a reasonable doubt. If they fail to prove one element, no conviction is possible. A lawyer can help ascertain what is and isn't admissible as evidence in a trial.
