Certain steps must be taken once divorce is finalized

Although going through a marital breakup in Massachusetts can certainly be challenging, reaching the end of process may be just as challenging, if not more. Why? An overwhelming feeling about the future can quickly settle once the months of divorce-related anger, frustration, heartache, deadlines, paperwork and negotiation are over. However, a few tips may help with navigating life following a divorce.

First, updating records is an important step following divorce. For women, this may involve changing their last names back to their maiden names, for example. In addition, divorced individuals would be wise to ensure that their homeowners and auto insurance policies have only their names on them, not their exes'. This is also necessary for living wills, driver's licenses, credit cards and medical insurance policies.

Second, for those with children, finalizing or reviewing their co-parenting plans as soon as possible is critical. Then, they can finally start to implement it. An essential part of the implementation process is fostering positive communication with the other parent as well as with the children so that all expectations are met as efficiently as possible.

Divorce is one of the most stressful experiences a person may have in his or her life. However, if two divorcing spouses in Massachusetts are willing to try to negotiate rather than go to divorce trial, they may be able to avoid the animosity that often comes with traditional divorce litigation. Through negotiation, they can strive to achieve a settlement that pleases both parties, thus enabling them to move on with their separate lives more quickly and contently.
