Man taken into custody for gun, drug crimes

A man in Massachusetts was recently arrested on drug and gun charges. The man accused of gun and drug crimes was already wanted on a total of seven warrants at the time of his arrest. Police took him into custody after stopping to assist him with a car that had broken down.

Authorities said a trooper stopped to help the 42-year-old man at about 3:30 a.m. on a recent Sunday. His car appeared to have stopped working along Route 24. However, after learning about the man's warrants, the police officer started to arrest him and reportedly discovered that he had a loaded gun on him along with three strips of Suboxone.

The man is now facing about six new charges. These include carrying a firearm that was loaded and improperly storing a firearm. His charges also include possessing an opioid intended for the treatment of drug addiction.

Anyone accused of gun and drug crimes in Massachusetts has the right to proceed to trial to vigorously fight these charges. At trial, the prosecution must prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt -- a standard that exists with the goal of preventing innocent individuals from being convicted of and sentenced for crimes they did not commit. Rather than going to trial, a defendant may choose to seek to negotiate a plea agreement if the evidence that prosecutors plan to furnish to support their allegations at trial appears to be strong. The benefit of a plea deal is that it might lead to a lighter sentence than what may result following a finding of guilt at trial.
